Big News

Feb 11, 2011 by libjpn

I'm going to be 'blogging' at ObWi. ('blogging' is in scare quotes because I have my doubts about whether it will be blogging in any kind of classical sense)

At the moment, I'm a member of the blog, and am able to get to the posting interface. I just wrote what I think will be my main contribution, a Friday open thread. However, after writing it, I can only get the status of the post to be a draft. I'm thinking it might be a zen thing, and only when I really don't want to post, will I see publish in the pull down menu. Still, I'm going to see if I can figure out what is wrong tonite, and if I'm stymied, I'll send up a flare.

I won't be closing anything down here, but I am still trying to figure out what kind of dividing line I will make between what I write here and what I write there. Wish me luck.

This place is for meta issues mostly, isn't it? Not entirely of course--the wikileaks argument spilled over here, but generally we talk here about what is going on over there.

I suppose you could start talking over there about what goes on here, but much of the time there wouldn't be much to say.

Yeah, that's right, but I could see me writing something, getting involved in an argument, and then coming here to "discuss" the meta issues which would be just a way of opening another front. RIght now, when I start something about meta-issues, I try to state the problem in the post and then use the comments to state my own views as I think of the front page as a megaphone (though in this case a rather small one).

I thought this was relatively clear, but just recently, Marty seemed to make the basic claim that TiO was a place devoted to vilifying the conservatives at ObWi so it's pretty clear that the construct in my head doesn't always manifest itself in other people's minds. Still, how the division I imagine will be grist for future open threads. I'll let everyone here know if I post anything of consequence there.

lj, congrats. It will be fun to see what you get up to over there. :)

In the quibbling for a good cause department, in my universe it looks like the Eqypt post was Doctor Science's (not Fiddler's) and the HB Gary Federal post was Fiddler's (not Jacob's). For the sake of credit going where it's due....

As for over here, not all the posts by a long shot have anything to do with ObWi. Though I suppose maybe you'll just do that kind of thing over there now.

As for Marty's "claim," there has never been anything preventing him or anyone else from entering the fray over here. But Marty misunderstanding and mischaracterizing things is as reliable as the sun coming up, so maybe you'll find some other source of wisdom (your own, for instance) to guide how you walk the line in the future.

I would agree that the responsibilities of a front-pager over there are different from the responsibilities (if any) of the commenters, but you'll figure it out just fine.

To be fair to Marty, a blog that started out as "Hating on Charles Bird" - at the time the most noted (notorious?) conservative voice on ObWi - might well be assumed to be continuing in that presumptive tradition.

The fact that it isn't/doesn't is something that would only be apparent to someone who reads it regularly and is sensitive to nuance and irony. Many others, besides Marty, might not qualify in these two respects.
